SCIENTISTS DECIDE PLUTO IS NO LONGER A PLANET

Capping years of intense debate, astronomers resolved Thursday to demote Pluto in a wholesale redefinition of planethood that is being billed as a victory of scientific reasoning over historic and cultural influences. But the decision is already being hotly debated.

Officially, Pluto is no longer a planet.

"Pluto is dead," said Mike Brown, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology who spoke with reporters via a teleconference while monitoring the vote. The decision also means a Pluto-sized object that Brown discovered will not be called a planet.

BABY BOOM FOR NEAR-EXTINCT RHINO

WWF Scientists in Indonesia have found evidence of four new rhino calves on the island of Java.

The discovery in Java's Ujong Kulon National Park has raised hopes that one of the world's rarest breeds of mammals could begin to re-populate.

A WWF manager at the park described it as a remarkable achievement for conservation.

He said it was the first time in 40 years they had found evidence of so many new-born rhinos.

According to the head of Ujong Kulon, this year's baby boom could form part of a trend.

Another five Javan rhinos are thought to live in Vietnam, making it one of the rarest mammals in the world.

DODO SKELETON FOUND IN MAURITIUS

Scientists say they have discovered part of the skeleton of a dodo, the large, flightless bird which became extinct more than 300 years ago.
One of the team in Mauritius said it was the first discovery of fully preserved bones which could give clues as to how the bird lived its life.

Last year, the team unearthed dodo bones in the same area, but said the current find was more "significant".

The bird is thought to have been hunted to extinction by European settlers.

No complete skeleton has ever been found in Mauritius, and the last full set of bones was destroyed in a fire at a museum in Oxford, England, in 1755.

RAPHUS CUCULLATUS

The bones, thought to be at least 2,000 years old, included sections of beaks and the remains of dodo chicks.

ZANZIBAR ANGRY OVER FREDDY MERCURY BASH

Freddie Mercury is Zanzibar's most famous son. Born Farrokh Bulsara to Persian parents on 5 September 1946 in Zanzibar, Freddie Mercury was educated in India before moving to the UK in 1964 where he led the international supergroup Queen to stardom.

A Muslim group in Zanzibar has protested about plans to mark the 60th birthday of the late rock legend and Queen front man Freddie Mercury.

The Zanzibar-born singer who was openly gay was renowned for his flamboyant lifestyle. He was also HIV positive.

Muslims on the Tanzanian archipelago say his antics violated Islam and want a beach party on Saturday cancelled.

Zanzibar outlawed gay relations in 2004, a move which attracted criticism from gay communities around the world.

The BBC's Ally Saleh in Zanzibar says it is not certain that the star ever returned to his birthplace, although he remains Zanzibar's most famous son.

International stardom

The association for Islamic Mobilisation and Propagation (Uamsho) has threatened to hold a demonstration after hearing rumours that gay tourists were on their way to the island specifically to mark the musician's birthday.

We have a religious obligation to protect morals in society and anyone who corrupts Islamic morals should be stopped Uamsho head Abdallah Said Ali

Zanzibar's Ministry of Culture said it was aware of the issue. Uamsho head Abdallah Said Ali said the event would send out the wrong signals.

"We do not want to give our young generation the idea that homosexuals are accepted in Zanzibar," he explained.

"We have a religious obligation to protect morals in society and anyone who corrupts Islamic morals should be stopped,".

BUSH COMPARES BIN LADEN TO HITLER

US President George W Bush has compared Osama Bin Laden to Lenin and Hitler in a speech to US military officers. "Underestimating the words of evil and ambitious men is a terrible mistake," he said as he quoted extensively from Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda figures.

He said the world had ignored the writings of Lenin and Hitler "and paid a terrible price" - adding the world must not to do the same with al-Qaeda.

Mr Bush has been defending his security strategy as mid-term elections loom.

His speech on Tuesday - the day following the US Labor Day holiday - coincided with the country's traditional start date for election campaigning.

"Bin Laden and his terrorist allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them," he said.

But, he added, the US and its allies could be confident of victory in "the great ideological struggle of the 21st Century" because "we have seen free nations defeat terror before".

Anti-terror strategy

The speech covered many of the same themes as his first address in his current five-speech series defending his administration's so-called Global War on Terror.

He outlined a newly-updated "National Strategy for Combating Terrorism" document, which includes objectives such as preventing future attacks and denying weapons of mass destruction to terrorists.

"The best way to protect America is to stay on the offence."

JAPAN LAUNCHES NEW SPY SATELLITE ON NORTH KOREA

Japan has launched a rocket carrying its third spy satellite, increasing its ability to monitor North Korea.
Japan's space agency, Jaxa, launched the H2-A rocket from the southern island of Tanegashima.

Japan has two spy satellites already in orbit. Two others were lost when a rocket failed in November 2003.

Japan began its intelligence-gathering satellite programme following North Korea's test launch of a long-range missile that flew over Japan in 1998.

This launch follows a series of missile tests by Pyongyang in July, which included a new weapon, the Taepodong-2, which is potentially capable of hitting parts of the United States.

The rocket lifted off from Japan's space centre at 1335 local time (0435 GMT).

Shortly afterwards, the satellite separated successfully from the rocket, officials said.

The optical satellite will be able to distinguish objects such as cars on the ground, Kyodo news agency said.

A radar satellite is scheduled for launch later this year.

THE CLASH OF CULTURES AND RELIGION // MUSLIM ANGER GROWS AT POPE SPEECH

The Pope's comments came on a visit to Germany
A statement from the Vatican has failed to quell criticism of Pope Benedict XVI from Muslim leaders, after he made a speech about the concept of holy war.
Speaking in Germany, the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said Muhammad had brought the world only "evil and inhuman" things.

Pakistan's parliament passed a resolution on Friday criticising the Pope for making "derogatory" comments.

The Vatican said the Pope had not intended to offend Muslims.

"It is clear that the Holy Father's intention is to cultivate a position of respect and dialogue towards other religions and cultures, and that clearly includes Islam," said chief Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi in a statement.

But in spite of the statement, the pontiff returned to Rome to face a barrage of criticism, reports the BBC's David Willey in Rome.

The head of the Muslim Brotherhood said the Pope's remarks "aroused the anger of the whole Islamic world".

Violence and faith

In his speech at Regensburg University, the German-born Pope explored the historical and philosophical differences between Islam and Christianity, and the relationship between violence and faith.

The remarks do not express correct understanding of Islam
Mohammed Mahdi Akef
Muslim Brotherhood

Stressing that they were not his own words, he quoted Emperor Manual II Paleologos of the Byzantine Empire, the Orthodox Christian empire which had its capital in what is now the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The emperor's words were, he said: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Benedict said "I quote" twice to stress the words were not his and added that violence was "incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul".

'Angry and hurt'

Pakistan's parliament passed a resolution demanding that the Pope retract his remarks "in the interest of harmony between religions".

"The derogatory remarks of the Pope about the philosophy of jihad and Prophet Mohammed have injured sentiments across the Muslim world and pose the danger of spreading acrimony among the religions," the AFP news agency quoted the resolution by the country's national assembly as saying.

Meanwhile, the "hostile" remarks drew a demand for an apology from a top religious official in Turkey - where the Pope is due in November on his first papal visit to a Muslim country.

Ali Bardakoglu recalled atrocities committed by Roman Catholic Crusaders against Orthodox Christians and Jews, as well as Muslims, in the Middle Ages.

In Egypt, Muslim Brotherhood head Mohammed Mahdi Akef said the Pope's words "do not express correct understanding of Islam and are merely wrong and distorted beliefs being repeated in the West".

In a statement, he was "astonished that such remarks come from someone who sits on top of the Catholic church which has its influence on the public opinion in the West".

Sheikh Youssef al-Qardawi, a prominent Muslim cleric in Qatar, rejected the Pope's comments, in remarks reported by Reuters.

"Muslims have the right to be angry and hurt by these comments from the highest cleric in Christianity," Mr Qardawi reportedly said.

"We ask the Pope to apologise to the Muslim nation for insulting its religion, its Prophet and its beliefs."

The 57-nation Organisation of the Islamic Conference also said it regretted the Pope's remarks, and news agencies reported a furious reaction on Islamic websites.

UN CALLS RAPE 'A CANCER' IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland has called sexual abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo a cancer "that seems to be out of control".

Delivering a report to the UN Security Council, he called on the Congolese authorities to act more firmly to end violence against civilians.

He said the situation in northern Uganda was now more promising than it had been in years. However, Mr Egeland said the challenges facing DR Congo were enormous.

Ending impunity

He said the country - still emerging from civil war - had seen the worst haemorrhage of human life in this generation.

Four million people had been killed by war and preventable diseases in the past eight years - the equivalent of six Rwandan genocides, Mr Egeland said.

The UN and the transitional Congolese government had made much progress, but not enough to end impunity, he said.

He described being deeply shocked by the stories of women who had been abused by members of the army and militia groups.

"One woman told me she had been raped repeatedly for more than a week, by a group of soldiers who kept her bound so tightly that she had permanently lost the use of her hands," he said.

Mr Egeland said mutilations often followed the rapes.

"Military and civilian authorities are still virtually unaccountable for crimes against civilians," he warned, adding that more forceful pressure needed to be put on the army in particular.

Peace and justice

On Uganda, Mr Egeland highlighted impunity as a key issue in the aftermath of the recent agreement between the government and rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), says the BBC's Mike Wooldridge at the UN.

The 19-year conflict in the north became notorious for the brutality shown to children and the emptying of the countryside, our correspondent says.

Mr Egeland said people in the region were worried that indictments by the International Criminal Court against leaders of the LRA could threaten the peace process.

'Poll boost' for German far right

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is one of Germany's poorest states
Early results in German regional polls show the far right has won seats in an eastern state and Chancellor Angela Merkel's party has performed poorly.
The far right National Democratic Party (NPD) won about 7% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - with 5% needed to enter parliament.

The previous government compared the NPD to the early Nazi party.

The polls also showed Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrat (CDU) party trailing rival parties in Berlin.

Early results gave the NPD between 7.1% and 7.3% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Erwin Sellering, deputy leader of the Social Democrat Party (SPD) in Mecklenburg, said that result would be "depressing for us all because it was our common goal to prevent it".

Early results showed Berlin's popular Mayor Klaus Wowereit of the SPD clearly heading for re-election, as had been thought likely.

Soaring unemployment

The BBC's Tristana Moore in Berlin says the results suggest another setback for the CDU, which has been haemorrhaging support at the national lead because of infighting.

Two states in former communist eastern Germany already have far-right MPs.

The NPD's support is partly explained by its hard anti-immigrant stance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which has soaring unemployment.

Mrs Merkel, who became the country's first woman chancellor less than a year ago, would have wanted to do well in the state, which includes her home constituency.

The state is currently governed by a so-called "red-red" coalition of Social Democrats and the Left Party.

Manufacturing has collapsed across the former East German state following reunification in 1990, forcing many of its residents to go west in search of work.

The government of former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder had tried to ban the NPD, describing it as a latter-day version of Hitler's Nazi party. But Germany's Supreme Court rejected Mr Schroeder's attempt in 2003.

The NPD has lawmakers in the state of Saxony, following regional elections in 2004.

Another far right party - the German People's Union (DVU) - entered parliament in the state of Brandenburg.

US HYPOALLERGENIC CATS GO ON SALE

The world's first specially bred hypoallergenic cats have gone on sale in the United States.

US biotech firm Allerca says it has managed to selectively breed them by reducing a certain type of protein that triggers allergic reactions.

The cats will not cause the red eyes, sneezing and even asthma that some cat allergy sufferers experience, except in the most acute cases.

Despite costing ,950 (£2,104), there is already a waiting list to get one.

Allerca first started taking orders for hypoallergenic cats back in 2004.

"No genetic modification"

It tested huge numbers of cats trying to find the tiny fraction that do not carry the glycoprotein Fel d1 - contained in an animal's saliva, fur and skin - which often prompts an allergic reaction in humans.

Those cats were then selectively bred to produce the hypoallergenic kittens now on sale.

The company's Steve May told the BBC that it was a natural, if time consuming, method.

"This is a natural gene divergence within the cat DNA - one out of 50,000 cats will have this natural divergence," he said.

"So candidates - natural divergent cats - were found and then bred so there is really no modification of the gene."

The BBC's Pascale Harter says there could soon be a global market for the kittens - in the US alone 38 million households own a cat, and around the world an estimated 35% of humans suffer from allergies.

JAPAN LAUNCHES SUN MICROSCOPE

Scientists have high hopes for Japan's Solar-B mission which has been launched from the Uchinoura spaceport.

The spacecraft will investigate the colossal explosions in the Sun's atmosphere known as solar flares.

These dramatic events release energy equivalent to tens of millions of hydrogen bombs in just a few minutes.

The probe will attempt to find out more about the magnetic fields thought to power solar flares, and try to identify the trigger that sets them off.

The ultimate goal for scientists is to use the new insights to make better forecasts of the Sun's behaviour.

Flares can hurl radiation and super-fast particles in the direction of the Earth, disrupting radio signals, frying satellite electronics, and damaging the health of astronauts.
